Today we lost a true legend, Harry Belafonte. His passing is a great loss not only to his family and friends but to the entire world. Harry was more than just a singer and actor; he was a civil rights activist, a humanitarian, and a philanthropist. He was a man who dedicated his life to making the world a better place for everyone.
I had the privlege of meeting Mr. Belafonte through my mentor Ambassador Young, and was struck by his unwavering commitment to social justice and his deep empathy for those who were suffering. He was a true friend of the Civil Rights Movement, and wholeheartedely supported Dr. King and Ambassador Young in their endeavors, and by extension, the Silver Rights Movement that Operation HOPE spearheads today.
Harry Belafonte was a truly a national treasure; not because of his fame, but because of his courage and commitment to making the world a better place. He was a shining example of what it means to use your platform for good, to speak truth to power, and to fight for what is right.
As we honor the life and legacy of Harry Belafonte, let us also be inspired by his example. Let us use our platforms, no matter how big or small, to speak truth to power and to fight for a more just and equitable society. Let us be bold and courageous like Harry, and let us work to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to achieve their dreams.
Rest in peace, Harry Belafonte. You will always be a shining star in our Walk of Fame.
