Book Discussion on The Tyranny of Experts

William Easterly talked about his book, The Tyranny of Experts: Economists, Dictators, and the Forgotten Rights of the Poor, in which he argues that the United Nations and other organizations have failed to reduce global poverty since World War II. Professor Easterly argued that poverty experts too often look for short-term technical solutions and do not consider the role that a lack of political and economic rights plays in keeping people in poverty. He spoke at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, California. 

 

Book Discussion on How the Poor Can Save Capitalism

John Hope Bryant talked about his book, How the Poor Can Save Capitalism: Rebuilding the Path to the Middle Class, in which he argues that the U.S. economy can be fixed by building financial literacy and expanding opportunities in poor communities in the United States. He at an event including Governor Tim Pawlenty (R-MN), chief executive officer of the Financial Services Roundtable, and others.

 

After Words with Jason Riley

Jason Riley talked about his book, Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make it Harder for Blacks to Succeed, in which he argues that government assistance programs designed to help African Americans rise from poverty are ineffectual. He said that programs intended to help poor minorities frequently and unintentionally hinder minority progress. He discussed his findings with American Urban Radio’s April Ryan.
