Founder's note:  I and we welcome a long-time friend, and an incredible leader in Tim H. Wennes, vice chairman for Union Bank, as the newest member of the prestigous Operation HOPE National Board of Directors.  Under Tim's leadership we seek to build upon and further strengthen our strong and ongoing partnership with the bank, systemwide.

Tim Wennes and my other friend Pierre Habis joined me on the stage at our recent HOPE Forum, Oakland, where we signed a westcoast framework agreement between the bank and HOPE, tied to the HOPE-FINANCIAL SERVICES ROUNDTABLE National Framework Agreement. Likewise, recently Tim and Pierre traveled to be with us at our recent HOPE Forum at NYSE, where Tim was a featured speaker at the HOPE Financial Literacy Forum at NYSE on July 20th-21st, 2011. The bank is also a leader in our Banking on Our Future program, provides HOPE Corps volunteers on the ground, and supports, amongst other things 5MK, and support a co-located HOPE Inside location in Long Beach, California.

Timothy H. Wennes is Vice Chairman and Chief Retail Banking Officer for UnionBanCal Corporation and its primary subsidiary, Union Bank, N.A.  Mr. Wennes, who has more than 20 years of retail, commercial and business banking experience, was appointed Vice Chairman in April 2010 after serving as Senior Executive Vice President since November 2009.  He joined the company in 2008.

In his current role, Mr. Wennes is a member of the bank’s Executive Committee, which serves as Union Bank’s primary policy-making body.  In addition, he directs all aspects of Retail Banking, including Community Banking’s 403 branch offices in California, Oregon and Washington.  He also has executive oversight of Business Banking, Consumer and Mortgage Lending, Retail Deposits and Products, Corporate Marketing, and Corporate Social Responsibility.

Prior to joining Union Bank, Mr. Wennes’ career included experience at major banks including Wells Fargo and Countrywide Bank.  He began as a loan officer and eventually served in capacities ranging from regional president to president and chief operating officer.  Mr. Wennes is passionate about developing innovative ways to deliver quality banking products and services in a socially responsible way to the community.
As part of his responsibilities for Corporate Social Responsibility on behalf of the bank, Mr. Wennes is a champion for financial literacy, employee volunteerism, and environmental stewardship.  He has been active with Operation HOPE, an organization committed to economic empowerment in underserved communities. Union Bank is partnering with Operation HOPE and other organizations to provide financial literacy education to low- and moderate-income youth and adults.  Mr. Wennes also understands the positive impact that occurs when employees engage in important causes in the community.  In fact, in 2010 the total number of hours that bank employees contributed to their communities more than tripled over the previous year.  And, he’s at the forefront of the bank’s commitment to creating a healthier environment, fostering awareness and specific actions to reduce the bank’s carbon footprint.
