Global Movement Celebrates Our Basic Human Right to Respect and Self-Determination in More Than 40 Countries Worldwide

Global Dignity Day, the international event that brings together thousands of youth every year to celebrate the universal right we all have to respect and fair treatment, will take place on Wednesday October 20, 2010 as record numbers of youth take part in events in more than 40 countries.

Founded by H.R.H. Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Operation HOPE John Hope Bryant and Philosopher and Professor Pekka Himanen, Global Dignity Day was established to create a new understanding, where regardless of financial status, religion and nationality, people can assemble to celebrate our "oneness" in being human.

"At a time in human history where it sometimes seems that there is more that divides us than unites us as a global community, Global Dignity is something that we can all agree on," said fellow Young Global Leaders (YGLs) and Global Dignity (GD) Co-Founders HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, Professor Pekka Himanen of Finland, and Operation HOPE Founder, Chairman and CEO John Hope Bryant of America as they celebrated the 2010 Global Dignity Day. "Honoring and respecting those you encounter has powerful consequences. Giving dignity will never cost you anything but it can give you so much in return."

Taking place every October 20 since 2008 in association with the Forum of YGLs, an auxiliary of the World Economic Forum, Global Dignity Day 2010 sessions brings together thousands of youth in over 40 countries on every continent, instilling in them the belief that all of us have the universal right to lead a dignified life though an understanding of the Five Dignity Principles:

1. Every human being has a right to lead a dignified life.

2. A dignified life means an opportunity to fulfill one's potential, which is based on having a human level of health care, education, income and security.

3. Dignity means having the freedom to make decisions on one's life and to be met with respect for this right.

4. Dignity should be the basic guiding principle for all actions.

5. Ultimately, our own dignity is interdependent with the dignity of others.

Global Dignity Day is an expansion of Global Dignity – a program started with the co-founders asking volunteers around the world to commit to teaching courses in dignity to their local classrooms, houses of faith, non-governmental organizations and schools, as a part of its mission to improve the state of the world.

BBDO New York is the pro bono agency for Global Dignity Day and is creating a campaign in support of the event. The message asks people to donate dignity. By taking a few moments to share thoughts, feelings and experiences on leading a dignified life, it is hoped that this campaign can help raise awareness for and a movement behind this important human right.
