"Most Muslims have yet to experience the economic opportunity, or sufficient education, to be able to understand, no less implement, the ideals of pluralism and co-existence. ….In the same way that American Catholics shaped Vatican II, and Americans Jews influenced world Judaism with modern ideas like the reform movement, American Muslims must redefine Islam to include separation of church and state, as well as human rights. The future of Islam lies in the West, in a prosperous community of believing Muslims that have a strong, open-minded voice.
