As the CEO of Operation HOPE, I often talk to business owners, aspiring entrepreneurs, and individuals about the difference between “getting money” and “building wealth.” I’ve learned that one of the first steps for anyone facing a financial challenge – a person who genuinely wants to create new beginning – is getting them into the right frame of mind. Financial problems can be stressful… causing anxiety, depression and a host of mixed emotions. But for those who are committed to taking control of their financial situation, there is HOPE. No matter your age or what may feel like insurmountable circumstances, remember that you can “begin again.”

At the start of the new year, many of us set New Year’s resolutions for ourselves. Unfortunately, it is all too common for these resolutions to fall by the wayside as we encounter challenges and setbacks. This can be discouraging, but it is important to remember that falling short of our goals is not a failure. Rather, it is an opportunity to press reset and achieve your true destiny.

When it comes to taking control of our finances perseverance is key. It is easy to become discouraged and give up when things don’t go according to plan, But those who truly succeed are the ones who acquire the mental fortitude to pick themselves up and keep going. This doesn’t mean that you should keep pushing forward blindly; it is important to take a step back and assess what went wrong and how you can do things differently moving forward. But never, ever give up.

So, what can you do to “begin again” when you find yourself falling short of your goals? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Reflect & Assess: Take some time to be honest with yourself about what led to your setback. What could you have done differently? What did you learn from the experience? Is this a pattern of behavior that can be corrected alone, or do you need to partner with a more experienced professional to find a resolution? When you know better, you can do better.
  • Get back to basics: Sometimes, it’s easy to get caught up in grandiose plans and forget the basics. Take a moment to honestly reflect on your choices. Have you been living a bit too large? As you begin again, shift your time and attention to the simple things in life — especially when it comes to your relationship with money.
  • Find inspiration and support:  Surround yourself with people who inspire you and  provide the support needed to keep going and thrive. This could include friends, family, or a mentor. Remember the old African proverb— “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

To begin again may not be easy, but with perseverance, reflection, and the right support, you can overcome any obstacle and reach your goals. Remember that your success is not about your past failures, but rather how you got up after the fall. It’s all up to you. We all deserve a chance to right size our current situation. New beginnings await!
