What would you want to be if all you saw as symbols of success were rap stars, athletes and drug dealers? John Hope Bryant sheds light on the importance of role models following his keynote speech at a financial forum in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. In Mississippi, only 2.1% of residents make 200,000 or more a year, making it the poorest state in America. Bryant explains, “We model what we see. If we don’t have 5% or more of entrepreneurs creating ideas, law enforcers to look up to, small business owners, or ethical community leaders, then a community has nothing to model.” To create better well-being, higher self-esteem and more economic energy, we must become better role models.
