John Hope Bryant and here are his Top 10 Rules for Success.

1. Be nuts!
He was raised primarily in Compton, and in the South Central area of Los Angeles.

2. Vow to never be poor
He founded Operation HOPE, Inc. immediately following the 1992 Rodney King riots in Los Angeles.

3. #Believe in yourself
He was nominated by the World Economic Forum to serve as one of the 237 Young Global Leaders.

4. Make friends everywhere
He was appointed vice-chairman of the President’s Council on Financial Literacy by U.S. President George W. Bush.

5. You can’t grow without legitimate suffering
He continued this work under President Barack Obama as part of the U.S. President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability.

6. Redefine success
He was appointed chairman of the new Subcommittee on the Underserved and Community Empowerment.

7. Have confidence
In 1994, he was selected by Time Magazine as “One of America’s 50 Most Promising Leaders of the Future”.

8. Give
He became the first African-American to be knighted by German nobility and the royal House of Lippe.

9. Empower people
He received the Crystal Heart Award from the University of Southern California School of Social Work for his work in community service.

10. Don’t take yourself too seriously
The Root named Bryant to its 2011 100 List of Influencers and Iconoclasts.
