About 9.2 percent of Alabama's 2.1 million households didn't have a checking or savings account in 2013, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.'s newly released survey.

This represented 189,244 households of what's referred to as the unbanked population.

The proportion of the state's percentage of unbanked households was down from 10.1 percent in 2011.
