Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 1.50.50 PMIRVINE – More than 400 guests attended an inaugural “Civil Rights to Silver Rights” economic empowerment summit last weekend at Christ Our Redeemer AME Church, officials said this week.

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the civil rights movement (Brown vs. Board of Education), the summit convened a coalition of faith leaders, bank executives, business entrepreneurs and educators to promote financial literacy. 

The two-day event — officially called the National Faith, Leaders, Educators, Small Business and Youth Conference — offered public workshops on faith-based community development, financial literacy, youth mentoring and higher education.

Operation Hope founder/CEO John Hope Bryant told conferees that without an understanding of how the world economy works, black people remain “economic slaves” in America.
