Please join me to congratulating a great HOPE leader, and a great Scoutmaster, James Bailey, on being selected as one of the Atlanta Area Council, 2011 Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award Honorees.  This recognition is well deserved for his leadership, commitment, and service to Troop 100.

The Whitney M. Young Award is Awarded to a volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution through Scouting to low-income urban/rural youth. Whitney M. Young, Jr. (1921-1971) was the executive director of the National Urban League in the 1960's. In a speech delivered at the 58th National Annual Meeting of the B.S.A., he challenged Scouting's leaders to tackle the "unfinished task of making real the dream of justice and equality" for American youngsters. Soon afterward, he was chosen by President Lyndon B. Johnson to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom – the Nation’s highest civilian award. Mr. Young died in a drowning accident in 1971. Recipients are approved nationally through nomination to the National Multi Cultural Division  by a local council. Selection is based on the performance of outstanding services by an adult individual or an organization demonstrated through involvement in the development and implementation of Scouting opportunities for youth from rural or low income urban backgrounds. Delores Harmon, Troop 100 COR, and Curley Dossman, Troop 100 supporter,  have both been awarded the Whitney M. Young Award in the past for their dedication, commitment, and support of the Urban Scouting Program in the Atlanta Area Council. Troop 100 is blessed to have such a strong and passionate group of committed adult leaders who continue to volunteer their love, time, and resources to the scouts on a weekly basis.

Scoutmaster Jay will be presented this distinguished award at the Atlanta Area Council, 2011 Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award Banquet on October 20th, 2011, in Atlanta, Georgia.  Jay Bailey is the recently appointed market vice president for Operation HOPE, Atlanta, where our historic HOPE Financial Literacy Empowerment Center, Ebenezer, will be located.
