Every year I select a word, symbolic of what "I am about" that particular year.  The word creates a theme, and the theme drives a vision, and the vision fuels an ambition, to be "better."  All of this tied to life-affirming action.

In 2008, my word was "authenticity."

In 2009, my word was again "authenticity," simply because I liked it so much.

In 2010, my word was "presence," as in "to be present."

In 2011, inspired by a New Year's Eve conversation with my new friend Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, my word for 2011 is "intentionality," meaning, to be "intentional," or to bring "intention" to all that I do.  Or quoting my friend and mentor and shero, the late Dr. Dorothy I. Height, "John, you remind me of a dreamer, with a shovel in your hands."

In 2011, I plan to be a very productive and very focused dreamer, with a shovel, in my hand.  What is your word for 2011, and your commitment (to yourself and this world of ours)?

Let's go….

Onward with HOPE
