RD grandpa 2

When someone is important to one that I love, treasure and respect, they are important to me.  Recently my trusted long-time right arm, advisor, chief of staff and friend (really an extended member of my family), Rachael Doff, lost her beloved grandfather Mr. Jesse W. Callihan.  Because she loved him, so did I, but it also appears that he was well worth the love all on his own merit.  Read below the story and passion behind this man, from the words of Rachael herself… Jesse W. Callihan has been, well "promoted." Gone on to a better place.

In the words of a proud granddaughter,

What can I say about my Papa?  Have you ever met someone who could make you feel warm through and through just by looking at you. The twinkle in his eye let you know, without a doubt, that you were loved and special.  And this was not a gift that he reserved for just his family.  He shared himself with anyone and everyone.  He believed in the Lord and let His light shine through his daily life.  He was strong, and in many ways, was the ultimate role model for the family.  One day when my mother was retrieving something for him out of his wallet she found a piece of worn paper with the poem below written on it.  When she asked her daddy (my Papa) about it she learned that he had been carrying it in his wallet since he could remember.

I KNOW SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT YOU!
Wouldn't this old world be better
If the folks we meet would say –
"I know something good about you !"
And treat us just that way ?

Wouldn't it be fine and dandy
If each handclasp, fond and true,
Carried with it this assurance –
"I know something good about you !"

Wouldn't life be lots more happy
If the good that's in us all
Were the only thing about us
That folks bothered to recall ?

Wouldn't life be lots more happy
If we praised the good we see ?
For there's such a lot of goodness
In the worst of you and me !

Wouldn't it be nice to practice
That fine way of thinking, too ?
You know something good about me;
I know something good about you.

I believe my Papa had a gift that allowed him to see through the walls and diversions people put in place for the purpose of protecting themselves, which also inadvertently creates  isolation.  He could see and reach through this into the heart and soul of a person conveying that it is okay to trust and love, because he loved unconditionally.

I am not saying he was perfect, but he showed you how to love people even with their imperfections.  God told us to Love One Another.  HE will take care of the rest.  I will miss seeing my Papa, but I will feel him in my heart every day.
