Rwanda and the United States February 12 signed a joint declaration, aimed at sharing experiences in science and technology. The Joint Declaration of Understanding was signed by the Minister of Technology in the President’s Office Prof. Romain Murenzi, while the Assistant Secretary for Oceans, Environment and Science Ms Claudia A. McMurray signed on behalf the United States.

Prof. Murenzi told the press at Village Urugwiro shortly after signing the agreement that both governments had expressed interest in initiating science and technology collaborative research projects for mutual benefit.
“We are looking forward to bigger collaborations.
The biggest focus here will be science technology and scientific research but as you know scientific research is a crosscutting area that also tackles areas like health, agriculture, environment, water and sanitation even tourism” the Minister said.  He added that the signing, the first of its kind in science and technology, was a follow-up of a meeting held in December 2006 in
Washington DC.
“This declaration is a manifestation of the willingness of the two countries to collaborate,” Murenzi stressed.
Ms McMurray said that the collaboration would encompass the fundamentals of livelihoods and economic development.
“It’s a crucial strategy that we are looking forward to. We shall identify numerous topics of cooperation,” she said.    Meanwhile, representatives from both sides also resolved to meet before September 2007 to discuss other possible areas of collaboration research in science and technology.
