Dec05_026Yesterday I was honored to join members of the dais, including Ms. Marian Wright-Edelman, president of the Children’s Defense Fund, for the 52nd Annual Conference of the National Council of Negro Women with living legend Dr. Dorothy I. Height, chairwoman-emeritus of NCNW, in Washington, D.C.

Here I present Dr. Height and NCNW with a check for $60,000 from our newly created HOPE Fund (funded by E Trade Financial) for Katrina victims, as part of Project Restore HOPE, our second stage economic disaster response initiative for victims of Katrina, Rita and Wilma. This check will directly benefit 20 families in Gulfport, Mississippi, associated with a single family homeownership development that Dr. Height helped bring into existence and was subsequently wiped out in Hurricane Katrina. Rev. George Rouse of Forest Heights Missionary Baptist Church and Mary Thigpen, president of Forest Heights Homeowners Association in Gulfport, both also spoke to the convention. And now the real work begins… rebuilding lives.

Onward, with HOPE
